For those of you who are interested in a job with a great deal of satisfaction, social care is worth considering. This sector comes with the ability to make positive changes to the lives of those who need help the most. Employment in this field ranges from childcare and counselling, to probation and psychology, and much more.

In line with this, if you’re wanting to get into a job within the social care industry, there are many employers that are worth considering. For example, the NHS offers jobs in hospitals as well as jobs that deal with mental health directly. The Prison Service offers jobs dealing with prison inmates and rehabilitation. There are also a lot of other organisations out there that seek individuals with relevant knowledge.

Points to Consider

  • Employment in this sector often leads to working in a range of settings. For example, you may be working in the likes of care homes, hostels, or even schools.
  • Work in this field often means working unsociable hours – you may be required to work late shifts and weekends.
  • Jobs in this sector are often stressful and emotional, as you may be dealing with tough situations.
  • Social care workers often work both in and out of the office, travelling to clients homes etc.
  • Jobs in this field can be very rewarding – roles often fundamentally come down to improving the lives of others in some shape or form.

Where should I study?

It is not always a requirement for roles within this sector, that you have a university degree. Usually, 2-3 A Levels (or a BTEC/alternative) and 5 GCSEs (Grades A-C) are enough to find a job in this sector. However, experience is very valued within this field; having voluntary work on your CV can be a big help towards finding a new job. Although, if you do wish to study a social care related degree, consider the following universities:

Additionally, skills such as listening, creative thinking, organisation and communication skills will come in extremely handy for roles in social care.
