New Year

New Year, New Job? Happy 2019

We all do it. The countdown to midnight has come and gone, the fireworks have finished and it is time to make your resolutions. The usual ones: this year I’m going to lose that weight, this year I’ll eat more vegetables, but did you know that one of the top resolutions is ‘this year I’m going to get a new job’?

A survey conducted at the beginning of 2018 found that getting a new job was in the top ten most common resolutions. Along with spending less money, spending more time on self-care, and procrastinating less. What if we told you that this January, all these resolutions are achievable.

Despite a slow start to the month as everyone’s holidays come to an end, January is a fantastic time to look for your dream job. By the second week of the month, it happens to be the time of the year in which the most decision-makers are together. This means the interviewing process and hiring decisions may become faster and smoother.

The other positive, is most companies have reviewed and set their budget. A new budget means more money for recruitment which means more vacancies to fill. That lull in the hunt you experienced in the run-up to the festive season may have been a result of a lack of funding. Hopefully after a relaxing holiday break, you’ll be striding into 2019!

Speaking of relaxing, the break should have given you some time to gather yourself ready for the job hunt. Here at Kiwi Recruitment we can help you relax even more with our top tips for getting yourself ahead of the game – after all, with more jobs comes more competition.

Sort out your CV

The mantra ‘new year, new you’ is not just a cliche! It is time to apply this sentiment to your CV. Your CV is the first thing potential employers review and determines whether or not they want to meet with you. It can be difficult to establish what to include and what information is deemed as superfluous and unnecessary, or even completely inappropriate.

Fear not! We have rounded up Kiwi Recruitment’s top tips on cleaning up your CV:

The important thing, when it comes to a CV clean up, is to ask yourself if the information is necessary. This is your platform to sell yourself – go for it! Whilst you are at it, check out our blog on how to make your CV stand out.

Be interview ready

Did you get clothes vouchers this Christmas? Time to put them to good use! Go get yourself an interview outfit that is ready to go. Make sure that you get something that suits the type of job you have applied for – but remember, whether business or casual, your interview is the first impression an employer has of you. It is always best to be neat, tidy, and well-groomed.

It is important to remember that an employer’s impression goes further than your clothes. We like to think that an interview starts as soon as you leave the house! You never know who you could meet on your commute, in the coffee shop, or outside the building. Be on your best behaviour from the moment you step foot out the door to avoid any awkward moments!

Practice makes perfect. Remember to use that time over the holiday period to practice answering interview questions and check out our tips on interviews, such as the five questions to avoid asking in an interview, and do first impressions matter?
